Dick Loftin is a singer-songwriter from Oklahoma. His first album, “Souvenirs” is a collection of ten original songs which cover relatable territory. Songs of yearning, love lost and seemingly impossible to find, working life and being laid off, a spiritual awakening, and devotion to a lasting relationship, are some of the themes explored on “Souvenirs.” He is often compared to Gordon Lightfoot, Paul Simon, Dan Fogelberg, and John Prine in writing style and performance.
“I started writing songs in 1970 when I was 15. I don’t call myself a musician. I’m self-taught on the guitar. I wanted to learn just enough so I could write songs.
When I heard “The Boxer,” by Simon and Garfunkel, I was inspired by the three-finger folk guitar playing style. This gave me a form of music I enjoyed and loved to play. A few years later, I heard the “Don Quixote” album by Gordon Lightfoot. Lightfoot set me on a path I follow to this day. His writing gave me a forum, a method, a way to write songs. I kept at it, and along the way, the songs improved. I considered it a hobby and a way to entertain myself. As the years passed, I had quite a collection.
A serious illness in 2020 lead me to realize if something happened to me, the songs would vanish and no one would ever hear them. I wanted to document the songs and give them a life. What started out as a hobby, then became a passion. This is how “Souvenirs” was created.
Music has always played a major part in my life, and I felt like I had been given a second chance. I am a grateful and blessed man. If you enjoy Gordon Lightfoot, Paul Simon, John Prine, Dan Fogelberg, Jim Croce, I think you will like the songs on “Souvenirs.”
